people ask what kind of gallery this is. the honest answer is that Public Works never set out to be one thing. it set out to be a space where the culture that actually shapes people whether via music, myth, mortality, the stuff kids scrawl on notebooks and adults are embarrassed to admit still moves them — gets treated with the same seriousness as anything on a museum wall. with my four exhibitions, that's still the closest thing i had to a mission statement.

Space Becomes You

Someoddpilot didn't want to just make another collection. they wanted to build a mythology — a story about the brands we consume, the gods we invent to replace the ones we've outgrown, and the shared visual language that holds all of it together. that idea became Space Becomes You: a photo book, an apparel line, and a film, staged as a full intermedia exhibit inside their own gallery.

the book — Space Becomes You: A Mythology, published with Trope runs 300 pages of surreal intergalactic landscape, psychedelic ritual, and beings that don't quite belong to this world. the capsule also marked the first apparel collaboration between Someoddpilot and Public Works. not a lookbook. a cosmology, with clothes as one of its artifacts.

I’m Not Trying to Change Anything, I’m Just Changing

Sonnenzimmer (Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi) and AppleButter Animated (Megan Jedrysiak and Jackson Ammenheuser) are two Chicago duos, two completely different disciplines, one shared question: where does image end and object begin?

Sonnenzimmer brought soft paintings and experimental print work into physical, touchable form. AppleButter brought motion into three dimensions with a painting robot, projections, original works that moved when they weren't supposed to. seeing both in the same room forced a kind of triangulation: between surface and meaning, between what you look at and what actually pulls you in.

You Will Die

extreme metal gets dismissed as surface-level darkness — corpse paint, distortion, shock value. it isn't. decades of death metal artists have built entire mythologies out of the genre's imagery, using terror as a language to ask real questions about politics, gender, science fiction, and what happens after the body stops.

You Will Die brought together paintings, illustrations, and mixed media from the artists who built that visual language in the first place — Dan Seagrave, Justin Bartlett, Jacob Bannon, Noelia Towers, and others. their work sat at the intersection of life and death, reality and illusion, existence and its absence. it wasn't a shock show. it was a meditation on the one fact none of us get to negotiate with: we're all finite. what do you do with that?

Ultraviolet Mythology

this one was supposed to open in the summer of 2020. it opened in 2022 instead, because the world had other plans. when it finally did, it became the show that opened Public Works’ new Wicker Park space which felt right, because Travis Egedy's work, made under the name Pictureplane, is obsessed with exactly that kind of delay and transformation.

Egedy's large-scale paintings sit at the collision of power, sex, and beauty in pop culture — built through a process that mixes digital output with physical, almost ritual gesture. The work doesn't ask to be liked. it provokes and it caresses in the same breath, which is a harder trick than it sounds. Egedy also runs the paranormal streetwear line Alien Body, and designed the apparel for the show himself — so the exhibition extended past the walls and onto the people who came to see it.
